Whole School Sponsored Walk

On Thursday 4th June the entire Balgreen community-pupils, staff and many relatives and friends of pupils took part in a sponsored walk to raise funds for Place2Be.

The day started with a whole school photograph in the infant playground before the Primary Ones led the way through Saughton Park and along the Water of Leith. Each class had its own stopping point for lunch. Some stopped at clearings on the walkway, the Primary Fives were guests of Colinton Parish Church, while the Primary Sevens were made to feel very welcome by Merchiston Castle School.  The year stages also had a few challenges to complete before setting out on the route home. The whole route was longer than some had expected - some parents were huffing and puffing before the Primary Ones stopped for lunch!

The weather was perfect, the people we met on the way were charming (even though they had to squeeze past four hundred oncoming bodies), the scenery was beautiful and the mood was one of great fun and expectation.

Thank you so much to all who helped make the day such a success - and let's hope Place2Be benefits from all our efforts.

New Additions and Garden Update

Over the past few weeks pupils and staff have had the excitement of watching the eggs in the bird box hatch, producing two lively, noisy chicks. However, upon return to school after a recent weekend, an unusual silence was noticeable in the area outside the lunch hall and it was clear from the webcam television that the fledglings had flown the nest. All is not lost however, as we have yet more additions to the school in the form of frogs in the garden pond.

There has also been activity in some of the garden beds. The vegetable plot has a selection of fresh produce just waiting to be harvested and the sunflowers, which looked as though they were suffering from the temperamental Scottish weather, have suddenly sprung into life.

Well done and thank you to all those who have taken on responsibility for caring for the garden - you've obviously got (Bal)green fingers!

Movie Making at Balgreen

In ICT lessons the Primary Sixes have made some wonderful, imaginative animations. Such effort has gone into their work, and their results have been so impressive, that we felt that it was unfair to limit viewing to Balgreen pupils and staff alone! Accordingly, we have taken the enterprising step of posting their animations on You Tube, where a worldwide audience can enjoy them. If you, or your family and friends, would like to view the animations, go to www.youtube.com and search for ”P6 A Balgreen”.

Comic Relief

Friday 13th March was a strange day indeed at Balgreen as, during a special Comic Relief assembly, staff disappeared and instead some musical artists from the past few decades came to visit.

With a funky slideshow created by Mrs Duncan, and music playing in the background, the musical artists took to the catwalk. They included The Pink Ladies from Grease, Cyndi Lauper, Dusty Springfield,The Bay City Rollers, Michael Jackson, some heavy metal rockers, Abba,  some rather laid back hippies and “groovy chicks” as well as two rather unsavoury punks. The Spice Girls rounded off the show to tumultuous applause.

Dizzy Decade, the compere, oversaw proceedings in a crazy mixed up outfit which spanned each decade from the fifties to the nineties.

All in all through the concert and a dress down day we managed to raise over £400 for Comic relief. Thank you to everyone for the huge support.

P2B

Congratulations and a great big THANK YOU to Idris H. in P7A who, by participating in a sponsored run, has raised almost £300 for P2B. In completing the run, Idris proved that he is a boy of great character and determination, as events conspired against him to make the run as testing as possible. Thank goodness you made the right choice Idris because what a fantastic amount of money you have raised.
